Notes: St. Vincent has been regarded as one of the most innovative and fascinating presences in modern music for nearly 20 years, constantly reinventing her audio and visual personae over the course of a kaleidoscopic catalog and winning six GRAMMY® Awards along the way. This summer, St. Vincent will venture once more into unexplored territory with a first-ever limited run of orchestral performances. These special shows will see a selection of favorites and deep cuts spanning the St. Vincent discography brought to life in spellbinding new dimensions with the aid of GRAMMY® Award-winning artist and renowned orchestrator, arranger, and conductor Jules Buckley. Together, St. Vincent and Buckley will perform with the world-renowned Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra to forge new sonic worlds from her acclaimed albums, including Marry Me, Actor, Strange Mercy, St. Vincent, MASSEDUCTION, Daddy’s Home, and All Born Screaming — in what promises to be an unforgettable evening of unique symphonic reinterpretations of songs from one of modern music’s most eclectic and acclaimed bodies of work.

Featuring the powerhouse vocal trio of Shayna Steele, Crystal Monee Hall, and Kelly LeVesque, Disco Divas celebrates the reigning Queens of Disco: Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan and the one and only Diana Ross, along with classic Disco hits from Earth, Wind & Fire, The Bee Gees, Michael Jackson and more. Sing along with the Disco Divas to your favorite hits like “Bad Girls,” “I’m Coming Out,” “Lady Marmalade,” “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now,” “We Are Family,” “I Will Survive,” and “She Works Hard for the Money.”

Notes: To express the spirit and founding principles of the United States, Aaron Copland turned to the words of Abraham Lincoln. In Lincoln Portrait, those words are brought to life by Academy Award-winning actor F. Murray Abraham, whose unmistakable voice gives new resonance to one of the most powerful works in American music. The work by Copland headlines a concert of all-American music with works by Bernstein, Joan Tower, and John Adams in a setting of excerpts from American poet Walt Whitman about his experience as a hospital volunteer during the American Civil War.

Notes: There is perhaps no other work that so perfectly captures the hope and possibility of life in an ideal America as Appalachian Spring, a moving, emotional centerpiece underscored in this program by the inclusion of artists from Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre performing Mark Godden’s Angels in the Architecture. Barber Violin Concerto, Jessie Montgomery’s Strum, full of dancing rhythms and folk infused melody, and a world premiere by Pittsburgh favorite composer Michael Daugherty round out this season finale, an evening that looks both forward and back in a vibrant celebration of American musical voices.

♦ The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Notes: Composer Howard Shore’s score to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring introduced audiences to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth and its resident cultures. In the saga’s second chapter, The Two Towers, the world has darkened, cloaked beneath the advancing shadow of Mordor and the threat of the evil One Ring.

The Tony Award-winning, fierce and energetic musical follows the life, loves, and heartbreaks of the legendary Hedwig, an East German rock and roll goddess. Funny, inspiring, and brimming with energy, Hedwig is a love story to those who have too much fight in them to quit.
