Notes: Brahms’ fourth and last symphony has been called “one of the supreme creative acts of the Romantic era” and is fraught with tension between lyrical beauty, intense drama, and subdued melancholy. The violin concerto by Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian, remarkable for its high-flying virtuosity, its yearning melodic intensity, its exoticism, is an under-performed gem in the music repertoire.

Notes: Coined from “motor” and “town”, Motown became the nickname for Detroit, from which arose this most influential popular music style.  A blend of soul and mainstream popular styles, this music dominated the 60’s and 70’s in America, giving rise to The Supremes, The Temptations, The Four Tops and many other solo artists.

♦ PITTSBURGH OPERA
♦ WOMAN WITH EYES CLOSED

Saturday, May 3, 2025 02:00 PM
Bitz Opera Factory
Sunday, May 4, 2025
04:00 PM

Notes: When Mona finds a mysterious suitcase filled with stolen masterpieces, she must grapple with a choice to save these priceless paintings or save her son—the thief. Burning the paintings would destroy the evidence of her son’s crime, but one of the paintings—Lucian Freud’s “Woman With Eyes Closed”—looks just like her own mother, a painter who died when Mona was still young. The uncanny resemblance unlocks long-buried memories that fuel the fires of three different possible endings.
